Background

Every year the first Sunday of August ie today is celebrated as Friendship Day 2026. I remember this day being made a day to celebrate when I was in college through Archies and MTV campaigns and this went viral without social media. Friendships help me sort out different issues of life and were healthy. Today, Instagram and WhatsApp dominate Friendship Day engagement, with #FriendshipDayIndia trending annually fueled by the race to show how many friends you have. Moreover, with social media the meaning and definition of friendship has completely changed and going somewhere that I don’t understand clearly. Here are the types of friendships definitions prevalent currently:

Friendship Type Role in Gen Z Life Health/Social Impact
Identity Friend Reflects values & identity Stability, lower anxiety
Seasonal Friend Transition support Adaptability, resilience
Circumstance Friend Daily companionship Reduces loneliness
Digital Companion Online-only ties Global belonging, risk of toxicity
Anchor/Confidant Emotional depth Stress relief, mental health
Challenger/Catalyst Push growth Builds resilience, creativity

I am now wondering if I need to junk my traditional friendship definitions and or debunk the new emerging friendship definitions. I went around looking for the clinical research to understand this deeper before I drop and nurture some others whether on social media or otherwise.

Friendship Reclassification and Research

With the current body of research which I have summarized below based on social media behaviour and how socially connected you feel with your friends are as under:

Friendship Type Social Media Effect India-Specific Evidence
Social Expanded networks, chosen family, constant availability Rohini Nilekani Philanthropies (2026)
Unsocial Superficial ties, digital fatigue, loneliness IJIP (2025), Youth Ki Awaaz Survey (2026)
Anti-Social Cyberbullying, exclusion, conflict Gen Z Digital Mediation Study (2026)

Let’s reclassify the friendships types given above among social, unsocial and anti-social. The quality of friendships matters more than the others and which ones I invest into and divest into some of the other friendships. Social friendships are protective, unsocial ones risk emptiness, and anti-social ones actively harm health. The challenge is to nurture social bonds while recognizing and avoiding unsocial drift or toxic ties.

Friendship Type Classification Impact
Identity Friends Social Stability, lower anxiety
Anchor & Confidant Social Emotional depth, stress relief
Challenger & Catalyst Social Growth, resilience
Circumstance Friends Social/Unsocial/Anti-Social (depends on depth & quality) Companionship or peer pressure
Seasonal Friends Unsocial Short-lived, risk of detachment
Digital Companions Unsocial/Anti-Social Belonging vs. toxicity

This now comes down to the health and wellbeing benefits of such friendships. Clinical evidence — both global and Indian — confirms that friendship quality directly influences health outcomes.

  • Social friendships heal.
  • Unsocial friendships neglect.
  • Anti-social friendships harm.

Investing in supportive, empathetic friendships is as vital as diet, exercise, or sleep for long term well-being. This may or may not be possible with social media and tech. The research gives more colour to the health outcomes of different friendships.

Friendship Type Mental Health Impact Physical Health Impact Key Clinical Sources
Social Lower depression, anxiety Better immunity, longer lifespan Frontiers (2023), MANAS Trial, AIIMS (2025)
Unsocial Loneliness, fatigue Higher cortisol, BP Nature (2026), TISS (2026)
Anti‑Social Anxiety, accelerated aging Inflammation, poor recovery PNAS (2026), AIIMS Patna (2025)

It is evident that I clearly need to weed out friendships and get into a detox and renewal program.

Friendship Detox and Renewal

Social Friendships (Healthy & Supportive)

  • Action: Nurture and sustain.
    • Express gratitude often.
    • Invest in offline bonding (shared meals, activities).
    • Communicate openly about boundaries. Clinical Insight: Strong social ties reduce depression and improve immunity (MANAS Trial, Goa; PLOS Medicine).

Unsocial Friendships (Detached & Superficial)

  • Action: Reconnect or redefine.
    • Initiate deeper conversations.
    • Limit passive digital engagement.
    • Accept natural fade if one sided. Clinical Insight: Loneliness from shallow ties increases anxiety and blood pressure (TISS Mumbai, 2026; Nature Communications, 2026).

Anti Social Friendships (Toxic & Harmful)

  • Action: Recognize and release.
    • Identify manipulation or hostility early.
    • Set firm boundaries.
    • Seek support if detachment feels difficult. Clinical Insight: Toxic ties accelerate biological aging and raise inflammation (PNAS, 2026; AIIMS Patna, 2025).

Key Takeaways

Current definitions of 6 types of friends are too much to manage and stressful to me although friendships shape our health. Nurture the supportive, redefine the superficial, and release the toxic. I would rather treat friendships are like social ecosystems — prune what harms, nourish what heals. By consciously managing each type, you build a network that supports emotional stability, resilience, and long term health.

Choose wisely — your well‑being depends on it.

Happy Friendship Day!
